Speaker Series @ Tūranga | A Discussion of 20th Century Avant-Garde Music

Justin DeHart, percussionist, and Associate Professor of Music at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury will be leading a discussion of avant-garde music in the 20th Century and its relevance today. What led to the development of this adventurous new mode of music and art making? Who were some of its champions and what did they create? Is avant-garde music still relevant in our current society in 21st Century Aotearoa, New Zealand?

Jo Burzynska will be playing records from the library collection before and after the talk. Justin will be showcasing these and other vintage recordings, along with anecdotes from his own performance career as a percussionist. Q&A to follow.
